Prof. O.P. Sharma, MD PhD

 

Om Prakash Sharma was born in India (04-07-1936), graduated from Victoria College, and attended G.R. Medical college- both in his native land. He then read tropical medicine at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine. He served internships in medicine in India, Scotland, and England and a residency at Albert Einstein Medical College, Bronx, New York, where he also completed the fellowship in cardiopulmonary medicine. A past Prophit Research Scholar of the Royal College of Physicians, London, Dr. Sharma was a Professor of Medicine in Residence at Kyoto University Medical School, Kyoto, Japan. Dr. Sharma is currently Professor of Medicine at the Keck School of Medicine at the University of Southern California, Los Angeles. Prof. Sharma was a well-known and internationally respected physician, clinical scientist, teacher, medical historian and humanist He was emeritus President of the World Association of Sarcoidosis and other Granulomatous Disorders (WASOG) and also archivist of this society. He was editor of the journal Clinical Opinions in Pulmonary Disease and of Current Opinion in Pulmonary Medicine. Dr Sharma has authored or edited five books, eight monographs, and written about 400 articles, short papers, editorials and reviews on the topics of sarcoidosis, tropical medicine, hypersensitivity pneumonitis, interstitial lung disease, other pulmonary disorders, and history of medicine. He was an important liaison between the American College of Chest Physicians and the Indian Thoracic Society. He passed away August the 19th 2012.
